From the landing of the Greek Army in Smyrna (Izmir) in 1919, to the end of the Greek-Turkish War of 1922, this excerpt explores the deeper causes of the first massive compulsory population exchange of the 20th century. 1.250.000 Greek Orthodox Ottoman subjects in Asia Minor, the Pontus, Eastern Thrace and Cappadocia were exchanged with 500.000 Muslim Greek citizens from Western and central Macedonia and Crete.
